This report was created in partnership with The State of Hawaiʻi Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Forestry and Wildife, Na ala Hele provided technical assistance with locating records and providing guidance for research methods. The National Park Service Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail provided staff time, assistance, and support for the development of the project. The National Park Service - Rivers, Trails and supports locally led conservation and outdoor recreation projects across the United States. NPS-RTCA assists communities and public land managers in developing or restoring parks, conservation areas, rivers, and wildlife habitats, as well as creating outdoor recreation opportunities and programs that engage future generations in the outdoors. Kohala Lihikai facilitated community involvement and assistance. The concept was presented at community gatherings, festivals, and in the media. Community review and suggestions were included as the plan was developed. Among the many groups and individuals who spent years preparing this report are Joe Carvalho and Toni Withington for Kohala Lihikai; Ted Matsuda, chair of the North Kohala Community Access Group, and John Winter, chair of the Advisory Group of the North Kohala Community Development Plan. This report owes its existence to Mike Isaacs (1943 - 2016),whose knowledge and energy got it moving on track. The community appreciates the talent and patience of Meredith Speicher of the Rivers Trails and Conservation Assistance Program, in working with us as a major player in producing this report.
